Off the Coast of Dunkirk, France 5:45 AM Local
The Soviet troops were tense. They were unsure how well they would do on this invasion, but they were all told that this was for the greater good of the Soviet Union. 14th Army, with 1st Motor Rifles Corps, led the attack, with the bulk of the small Soviet Navy. With their airsupport being provided by the British, they were certian they would be fine.
The invasion fleet neared, and as soon as targets were identified, the cruisers began lobbing shells at the defenders, and the Soviets eagerly made their way towards the landing zones. It would be led by the infantry, but the tanks would soon follow.

Location: Dunkirk, France
The French awoke to the shells of the Soviet cruisers falling on them and quickly moved out to their defensive positions as the Naval guns in bastions 30, 31, 32, and 33 opened fire on the Russian ships off shore. The troops of the North African 5th Division manned positions from the Belgium Border to Dunkirk proper with the 101st Fortress Division manning the actually town proper and the 32nd and Secteur Fortifié de Flandres manning the rest of the defenses towards Calais. The rest of the French 2e Armée received the warning and began moving towards the coast as orders went out to the French Air force to get planes in the air to help cover the marching troops.

As the Soviet troops hit the beach, the first groups were cut to ribbions by machinegun fire. It was gruesome.
However, they continued up the beach, firing their SVT-40s and PPD-40s at the French Positions, forcing their way up the beach, trying to secure the positions. Radiomen on the beach began directing the fire of the light cruisers onto the defesnes directly in their path, while the destroyers and subs watched for hostile ships to approach.
It was going to take some time to clear the way for the armor, and the infantry wanted to maintain a decent position.
Out at sea, the French coastal guns damaged the surface ships, but not very much. However, the cruisers turned their guns elsewhere, blasting away at the French defenses on the beach.

The French Infantry fought tooth and nail for the beaches around Dunkirk, but slowly they were pushed back into Dunkirk Proper and the surrounding villages. From there though they formed barricades and strong points in the villages and streets and held on to their ground. While this was going on the first elements of the IIe Corps de Cavalerie began arriving in the area and would be at the front in a couple of hours.
